Dust, fume and vapour hazards in shipbuilding and ship repair

Shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing expose workers to a wide range of airborne contaminants, including:

  • Welding fumes containing hazardous metals such as nickel, chromium and manganese, linked to serious health conditions including lung cancer, COPD and neurological damage.
  • Grinding and abrasive cutting dust from steel, aluminium and composite materials, producing fine, abrasive and often combustible particles.
  • Painting and coating vapours rich in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can cause respiratory irritation, skin conditions and long-term exposure effects.
